Focus On Faux
Centennial, Colorado
Before Sherri Grupe began her career in faux finishing, she spent much of her time working outside of the country. When she returned to the states, she was looking for a change. She had always been interested in interior decorating and faux finishing, and decided to take a five-day course. After completing the class, she was hooked, and from there started her own business. That was five years ago, and today business has never been better.
Sherri especially enjoys working with anything troweled. Wax and different plasters, from rough to smooth are among her favorites. On a recent job in Denver, she worked with a troweled cork material that yielded a rich textured finish. This finish was a first for Sherri, but she is always looking to try her hand at new mediums and techniques. For another client in California, she produced finishes using foil, wax, and metallic plasters. She says of job that she enjoyed it because “she was able to create a variety of finishes that were complex with multiple layers.”
When asked what she likes most about her job, Sherri replied, “the ability to positively influence someone’s home or business.” She enters each job with an impeccable work ethic and looks forward to the challenge of creating the perfect finish to fit her clients’ space and lifestyle. She cites the big impact that you can make in a space in a short period of time as one of her favorite aspects of the job. Another bonus for Sherri is the flexibility that faux finishing gives her in other areas of her life. International travel is Sherri’s other passion, and being her own boss she can work on her own schedule.
She believes that continuing education is critical to her business. On this subject she shares: “if I could do it everyday I would. You learn from your fellow students and the instructors, drawing on personal experiences and product knowledge.” She counts keeping up with the times through continuing education on the top of her list of reasons for her success. “Education puts me in a better place. It gives me a better portfolio and a chance to network with other students.” She also enjoys helping fellow student complete jobs.
Recently Sherri completed Kathy Carroll’s “You Got Waxed” course through learnfauxnow.com. She found the class to be easy to use and an excellent value saying that she “wouldn’t have learned any more from an ‘in person’ class.” She has already sold 4 wax finishes based on her portfolio from the class. From this experience with the online course, she has had occasion to speak with Kathy and her staff and says that they are “always available and very supportive” when she needs help. She comments “Kathy has been fantastic. I have emailed and called her and her response is quick. Ordering from her is also quick and easy. They are great to work with.”
