Artisan of the Month
Bill Fisher
Renaissance Painted Finishes
Elmhurst, Illinois

light construction and wood graining decorative painting John Michaels Decorating Chicago, IllinoisIn 1987 when Bill Fisher graduated from college and bought his first home, a 1920’s fixer-upper, his creativity was sparked.  When he first moved in, he noticed that some of the wood on the doors seemed to be pealing.  The doors had what appeared to be a burled walnut inset, but on closer examination he found it to be an expertly painted faux wood grain.  This peaked his interest, and he started playing around with paint.  On hearing of his interest, a cousin suggested he try rag-rolling and sponging, which were both popular techniques at the time.

Two years later in 1989, Bill relocated to Chicago.  This opened a new chapter in his life.  Unhappy in his current occupation in the finance industry, Bill decided to give faux finishing a shot.  He attended the Miller-Waagner School in Chicago and studied under Phoenix Miller.  He was impressed by how advanced the teaching and techniques were.  He says of his time with Phoenix Miller “she was teaching advanced techniques such as acid washes, wood graining, and stone techniques.  Her stone techniques included a drift stone that was built up in three layers of material.  She was doing all of this while most others were still sponge painting and rag-rolling.  I still use many of the things that she taught me today.”

Now, Bill considers himself a craftsman that has honed his painting skills over a number of years.  Bill’s skills blend well with those of his team at Renaissance Painted Finishes.  Although Bill started out his business doing only decorative painting, he quickly realized that he needed to expand to accommodate the market.  Now if you ask Bill what they specialize in, he answers “we do absolutely everything.”  With a team of painters and two artists, one specializing in mural work, they are able to offer just that.  Another benefit of Bill’s team is that because he has a team of painters to properly apply his basecoat, the homeowners only have to work with one company, not a decorative painter and then another company to handle the preparations.  He says of his team “they are a great bunch of people to work with.  They are hard workers, extremely creative, and great problem solvers.”

Another thing that Bill enjoys about his team is the ability to work collaboratively and feed off of each other creatively.   When asked what his favorite job to work on has been, Bill’s answer is “I love the work we do together as a team.  I like to see the work come together as each of us add our own piece.”  For example, one of their jobs had them creating a medieval tapestry on a rough burlap surface.  Bill started the project with the foundation painting, then one artist came in to do the scrollwork, and another came in to finish with the mural work.  The end result is a beautiful collaborative piece brimming with the talents of each person that worked on it.

Bill loves working for himself, and says that he “feels fortunate to have everyone that is on his team working with him.  They are a totally professional and well educated group of people.”  He also loves getting to meet new clients and working with them to achieve their goals for their home.  Bill adds “I can’t imagine another job that would have more positive benefits for me.”

When asked about his favorite techniques Bill answered “I don’t have a favorite technique.    I enjoy a new challenge.  Figuring out how to create a finish is a joy. “  It is for this reason that he encourages his clients to bring in pictures of finishes that they would like in their home.  He can work from both pictures in a magazine and pictures that his client has taken of a finish they like.  He comments, “Through years of experience I have gained the confidence of knowing that I can create any finish presented to me.”

light construction and wood graining decorative painting John Michaels Decorating Chicago, IllinoisI asked Bill if he uses products from Kathy’s store and his response was “I cannot remember the last time that I have bought product from someone else.”  That being said, I asked him to name some of his favorites.  Bill says he loves the new glazes by Goldens.  Specifically saying “they give a colored glass translucence to finishes that other glazes cannot.”  He enjoys working with the lime washes that Kathy offers because he enjoys working with a natural finish and it can be tinted, built up in layers, or if thinned it can be applied over other finishes.  Another of his favorites is Vella Venetian Plaster.  When he orders it, he simply refers to it as “butter” because that is how easy it goes on.  He also says that it polishes up beautifully.  For tints he likes those by Goldens because “the pigment is so finely ground that you can’t see it.”

Bill says of Kathy Carrol “she is invaluable.  I feel such a kinship with her, and feel that we are a great team together.” In the past, if he has had trouble selecting an appropriate product to create a finish, Kathy has been there to help with his decision.  Bill has also taken advantage of Kathy’s studio time and sought out her help to learn to work with Marmarino, some crackle techniques, and a pull away texture.  Bill finishes by saying that he “couldn’t be happier with the service he has received from Kathy.  It’s wonderful that she teaches and sells product, but she doesn’t compete against her students for clients.”
