Artisan of the Month
Laurie Schrader

Laurie Schrader has always had the recipe for success. A business graduate, she emerged a trained artist, having taken several classes in interior design, painting, and sculpture. With a sound business plan and an artistic flair, Laurie opened a bakery in Alpharetta, Georgia. After twenty flourishing years in the industry, she was ready for a change. “There was a girl, Shea Vickery, who came in to do a mural. She said, ‘If you can do that on cakes, you can do that on the wall. Come work with me and I’ll pay you one hundred dollars a day.’ I apprenticed with her for about a year.” Laurie explained. Making the switch from the food industry to a decorative artist was easy. Already familiar with interpreting her clients’ vision, it was simply a matter of trading one medium for another.

An entrepreneur at heart, it wasn’t long before Laurie launched her company, Creative Décor, located in the Cummings/Alpharetta area. She has clients all over, but they mainly hail from Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Buckhead, and the North Fulton Territory. Laurie says the reason she loves working as a decorative artist is because she is always creating. “I do interior design as well, and enjoy visualizing the room. I look at what is going on and create what the client wants. I’m not an out of the box kind of artist. I enjoy making it unique and special to my client,” Laurie says.

With Laurie’s business sense, she knows it’s important to continue learning and stay on top of the trends. She met Kathy Carroll through Kathy Anders and Susan Zolnik, two people she collaborates with. “I really like Kathy Carroll. She is an incredible teacher, very clear about what to do, and comes up with neat boards and products. That’s one of the things I love about Kathy she does her own creating. I love the fact that she is so accessible and helpful. Anytime there is a problem she is always willing to help and jump in. That is the biggest plus as a teacher and a businesswoman to all her clients and the industry as a whole. I’ve taken her classes and order products such as Glass Beads, Bella, and India Cane.”

Throughout her career, Laurie still comes back to her favorite: murals. “I am an artist, and as such, its no wonder murals are my favorite. I do a little bit of everything, but I like to stay with products that are safe for the environment.” Whether she’s transforming walls or any surface in between, Laurie works with metallic plasters, glazes, glass beads, and any product her client desires to achieve a spectacular end result.

One such job that Laurie accepted was a client who vitiated Lake Como, Italy. She’d had a previous artisan in before Laurie. When her client explained the prior issue, Laurie was emotionally hooked and had to help. “She had this tiny picture. When I met her, another artist had worked in her house and tried to create this mural. My client was beside herself. She said we went to Italy and I want to sit at my kitchen table and see this picture. She was almost in tears because the other artist could not do it, and it was a mess. I said I’m really sorry but we will have to start over. I had another artist help me and we did it in three days. She was so excited, so happy. She said it’s exactly like I’m back in Italy.” Affecting someone’s life in such a positive manner, being able to bring them such joy, is what makes this one of Laurie’s most memorable experiences.

Laurie’s numerous projects vary in size and duration. Some continue for many years. “I helped my client create her whole home and two years later she built another one and called me. We did a lot of unique contemporary designs. She trusted me so much she barely made a move without me and we did some very unique finishes. The whole design of it…I loved it. She was a very memorable client to work for and was my client for six years.” Repeat business makes up a large part of Laurie’s client base. Happy clients spread the word and she ends up with friends and family members of her existing clients.

Versatility is the life of an artisan and one of the things that Laurie adores. She employs her artistry along with her interior design skills for a specialized approach her clients find exceptional. “Right now my business has changed and evolved. I do more design and decorative artwork than faux. I work with a builder and agent that flip homes. I’ve done seven homes with them now. I pick their Granit and tiles, throwing in some faux finishes to give that home a special pop. That’s been really fun. I enjoy that. It’s been very successful to selling homes. They call me their guru.”

Laurie enjoys working in both residential as well as commercial. She was hired by Cinco Mexican Restaurant. “I did all of their after five bar, ceilings, walls, and I completely picked their designs. That was a really fun project. Kathy and Susan both worked with me on that.” She also enjoys working in elementary schools where she does some fun murals. Her most recent project was on a mission trip. “I went to Macedonia with my church to create a mural in an orphanage. That was in October 2013. It was primary because I had the kids helping with it and the mission group of girls, which none of them were artists.” That brought a smile, as it was fun for all of them, including Laurie.

Laurie’s love of murals and design is absolute, however, she has plans for the future of her growing business. “My ultimate plan is to be more in interior design. I am mentoring a faux artist to jump in and be a part of the Creative Décor team. I would like to go more into the creative décor aspect and be the creative brain behind it and not do the application. I would like to teach, to mentor, and to come up with the ideas, the applications, to manage the project. I want to evolve so that I can work on big pieces of canvas and sell them as applications.”
