Artisan of the Month
Eulojio Ortega or Chicago Muralist

Eulojio Ortega studied at Northern Illinois University, where he graduated with a concentration in illustration. His experience in college instilled exceptional technical skills with a strong understanding of color theory. Upon entry into the work force, he accepted a position at Caterpillar, as jobs were not plentiful in the art industry. After only a year, he grew restless to utilize his artistic talent. He did a short stint with a large art company and then, in 2003, launched his own business, Chicago Muralist.

Still hungry for knowledge, he continued to participate in workshops, as he was able. “I studied with some world renowned artists to enhance my fine art skills. I find that when your fine art skills are at a good level it helps with all kinds of art. You have a solid understanding, you’re not guessing. The artist workshops that I took taught me more than all the years of college did,” said Eulojio. Always on the lookout to evolve his skills, a colleague’s sample boards caught his eye. “I was impressed by the variety of his sample boards and he told me about Faux by Kathy. They run a very good business and when I went in there my mind was blown. I saw so many possibilities. Kathy Carroll’s business is so well stocked, so well run, and so enthusiastic. Her store probably singlehandedly holds up an entire corner of the market in the Chicagoland area. I have a lot of respect for her.”

Mainly a muralist, Eulojio does a lot of custom work. “I would say that I really enjoy it when I get trust. Clients really trust me; they let me do a lot of things that would probably be out of some people’s comfort zones. They know that no matter what I’m going to keep going until it looks really good.” The creative process is another aspect that drives him. His most powerful pieces command your gaze, challenge your imagination, and stay with you long after you’ve stopped looking. In the past three years Eulojio has filled his time with commercial jobs and three residential clients. “Commercial is a lot of fun because they let you do really magnificent things as it appeals to a big broad range. As long as the public will love it, they let me do a lot.” When he works with a residential client it evolves to work throughout their home. “With residential, I can slow down. It’s personal, they care about the details.” Based out of Sandwich, Illinois, Eulojio works in the Chicago suburbs such as Hinsdale, Burr Ridge, Addison, Geneva, St. Charles, and he often travels all over the country. He was recently in Oklahoma and is now heading to California.

Throughout his travels, Eulojio has had many memorable projects. “I love school murals. They are so much fun. No one else is going to have you paint some crazy mascot on the wall, looking fearsome, except for a school. They want that and it’s a lot of fun.” His mascots come to life with depth and movement. Another of his murals adorns a vaulted ceiling in a library. “I once did a library and carved scenes out of the bible. I left the textures loose, it doesn’t look complete but it does, the imagination completes it.”

When nature is torn down the lack of life, of green, is missed. It isn’t always possible to stop the process. During one such building endeavor Eulojio was brought in to honor the forest that was cut down. “I twice went to Houston, Texas and did a side of a building on a sixty foot lift over several months. It was an adventure. I can’t believe I did that. They tore down a grove of trees to put up a high-rise parking garage. They had me repaint them on the building. It ended up looking so good, so right. Peripherally they don’t see the building, it looks like there is a grove of trees there. It did its job.”

Another favorite of Eulojio’s was a mancave of cars. “For a long time I’ll do textures and custom finishes and then two or three months I get murals. I love combining the two. One in particular I did was a car showroom in my client’s basement. I painted the logos on the walls with texture and movement so they look like they’re carved on the walls.”

What does the future hold for Eulojio? “I want to do bigger projects with more interesting things. The bigger the better.” In addition, he’d like to open a studio and add teaching to his business.
