Lessandra Martins Melo

Lessandra Martins Melo left her home in Brazil and travelled to America to further enrich her love of language and art. Without knowing a single person, she settled in New York and found a job as a nanny for a decorator. As her communication skills grew, her creativity spoke for itself. Through the language of art she found common ground, which eventually led to the start of her business, Le’faux ARTisan, LLC, based in Greenwich, Connecticut.

A majority of her clients reside in Manhattan, New York, and the tri-state area. In business for over fifteen years, Lessandra knows the importance of staying on top of the ever-changing trends and products. “My first training was a class in Colorado. After that I began working with an artist that was in the field for a long time, who only used oil based products, and we exchange the old with the new materials,” said Lessandra. Enjoying a plethora of products and mediums, she continues to explore their potential and create unique custom designs.

Despite a busy schedule, she makes time for additional classes. After purchasing Hollywood Beads from Kathy Carroll to work on a ceiling project, Lessandra and a colleague decided to enroll in a class at her studio. “I totally loved the class. They make you feel at home, very comfortable. They allow for you to choose, to experiment. I felt that Sue has a passion and knowledge for what she does and it’s inspirational. The two of them are characters and one can laugh a lot. Even though it’s intense it didn’t feel like work. They know you are there to sell your jobs, not just create pretty things. My friend called it the Chicago experience. Yes, indeed, a fantastic one!”

All the varied experiences inherent of being a decorative artist appeal to Lessandra. “There is not a routine. It’s very creative and each week, month, there is a new project, new home, and new people. The possibilities of what you can do, that’s what I enjoy the most.” Whether she is working with striee, stippling, silk linen and grass cloth, gilding, textures, Venetian plaster, or wallpaper, she immerses herself in the process and creates coveted custom finishes for her clients.

Of the many projects she’s completed, Lessandra shared a few of her favorites. When an opportunity arose to work with a popular TV personality, she accepted the position. “It was very intense and we had a deadline. It was a challenge and you wanted to make it the best you could. The client herself was so pleased that she even asked my personal opinion on what to do in one of the rooms and went with my idea. That gave me tremendous confidence, knowing that she trusted my sense of design as well. There were different artists working on the project. One hundred and fifty people were working the job and all needed to be done by yesterday. Still it was exciting. I’ve been very fortunate with my business. My interactions with designers, contractors, and clients have been extremely gratifying.”

Finding joy in her work is inherent. “In the beginning of my carrier as a faux painter I did an emerald green Venetian plaster and worked two identical twenty feet high by twenty feet long walls. I worked hard but finished five days prior to the deadline. Task completed and rewarded lavishly (good laugh) I found myself singing ‘There’s No Business Like (FAUX-BUSINESS like) Show Business’. It was a motivation to continue on,” said Lessandra.

Pulling from her extensive travels, Lessandra understands her clients’ wishes and delivers designs that surpass their expectations. “I enjoy working with very elaborate finishes, several layers of glazes and patterns over and under; the walls became a piece of art. The more the depth, the more beautiful it becomes. I had a Russian client who loves gold, I worked with metallic gold and gold leafing over wood and metals, used various plasters and subtle textures. The fact that I was able to meet the challenge of combining various finishes and colors and yet, create a harmonious feeling throughout the house was gratifying. The house became a sophisticated showcase of my work and ability to transform spaces.”

Elaborate jobs are not the only ones that draw her. The small ones, with quiet reward, do as well. “I get a lot of joy from children’s’ rooms. The whimsical aspects are therapeutic. There is a peace to it.”

While Lessandra’s large clientele keeps her busy and she still finds the time to indulge in her other passion—fine arts. Several of her pieces have been showcased in galleries around New York and Connecticut. A second exhibit at a gallery in Old Greenwich is schedule for November and December this year. That decision was made during the class in Chicago, where she realizes she can do it!

With an eye on the future, she explains the changes she would like to make and looks forward to expansion and growth. “I want to create the samples, finishes, and sell the jobs. I want to ‘step down’ from the ladder and be the creative aspect. I see myself immersing as a fine arts painter. I experienced my first art exhibit two years ago, where I had about ten paintings; eight of them were sold. What a motivation! That is more of the direction I want to go. Eventually, I want to work in fine arts, train another artisan on the skills I’ve acquired, and still offer the services of my business.”
