Kathy Anders or Atlanta Decorative Finishes

Kathy Anders or Atlanta Decorative Finishes

In 2011, when an opportunity presented itself to sell the rights to her successful decorative finishing business, Kathy Anders weighed her options and decided she was ready for a change. She was prepared to put her marketing degree to good use. From 2011-2013, she was employed by a local Benjamin Moore dealer to market their store and open a decorative paint school for them in Roswell, Georgia. Through this hiatus, she discovered that her passion for teaching and decorative finishing was permanently embedded in her psyche. In March 2013, she decided to return to her passion. “When I sold my original company, I had come to a point in my career when I was not sure if I was going to stay in this field. I was somewhat burned out and no longer felt passionate about the business. After a short while away from my clients and the application business, I came to the realization that this is what I love to do and I decided to re-enter the field. Kathy Carroll was one of my supporters and was very encouraging,” said Kathy.

Two years later, Kathy opened a new company called Atlanta Decorative Finishes. Kathy does not take this new opportunity for granted. She divides her time between her school and her decorative finishing business, primarily in the Atlanta metropolitan area. She loves her career, as each day seems to bring new creative challenges; often serving as an ad hoc designer or color consultant while continuing to focus on projects that exercise her creative side as a decorative artist. Additionally, she loves to share her knowledge, techniques, and skills instructing students in her studio. “Roughly half of my current business is focused on cabinet refinishing and custom furniture. With the improving economy, ‘enhancing’ a client’s existing kitchen is a big part of my business.” Refinishing approximately two kitchen projects a month in addition to other projects, she works hand-in-hand with a carpenter and designer to redesign and make over kitchens without having to gut the entire space.

“In addition to my school, I am a trainer for Modern Masters® and Golden Proceed® line of products, and a distributor like Kathy Carroll,” said Kathy. “I met Kathy when I first started training, through my affiliation with Golden Proceed, and Modern Masters. Most artists in the industry knew about Kathy Carroll. She especially serves as a great example to those of us who are in the field of teaching. Her product knowledge is incredible. Her passion and desire to see her students succeed is undeniable as she always goes to great lengths to help whenever it’s needed. She is always there, always open, and will do whatever she can to help me succeed,” said Kathy.

Both businesses provide diversity to satisfy every aspect of Kathy’s personality. “I enjoy teaching and helping other artists with their business; sharing techniques that they can use. As part of her renewed commitment to the industry and her peers, she started the Southeast Decorative Artists League (SEDAL), a chapter of the International Decorative Artisans League (IDAL). In the past two years its membership has grown to over 25 professional artists and designers.

Kathy has many fond memories when it comes to her clients. Some of her favorites are from kitchens, where a simple facelift can transform tired cabinets and counters into a culinary dream. “One of the most rewarding projects is when you can take a kitchen without having to demo it, add trim, new doors and finishes, change the countertops, and simply embellish what’s already there. You can make it into a showroom. People are amazed,” said Kathy.

Kathy’s reputation precedes her. She enjoys working with friends and families of her current clients. As Kathy says, “Generally, this is a referral business, probably more than half of my clients are sourced from other clients. I also believe that this business is about building lasting relationships. I walk away from many of my projects with new friends—not just clients.” Her current project is remodeling an outdated powder room. “We began with horribly sponged walls from the 90’s and laminate counter tops. We installed a beautiful plaster with inlay glass beads and a sunburst pattern on the wall. We changed the counter tops, cabinetry, and the lighting. It’s completely changed into a [powder room worthy of a] million-dollar home. Including a very expensive ToTo® toilet!” said Kathy.

Whether she is working for her clients or as an instructor, she is able to immerse herself in her craft, finding the perfect colors, techniques, and trends. “I teach a lot of cabinetry and furniture classes, especially to the DIY clientele. With the ‘chalk’ craze out there, everyone wants to know how to make their furniture finds look like old, French pieces. I probably teach the classes featuring cabinetry and furniture at least two or three times per month.”

Kathy finds joy in hearing success stories from those who have taken her classes. “I have several students that have gone on to open their own decorative paint businesses. One of my fundamental beliefs is that if you are going to be a teacher, or sell products, then you need to provide follow up support to answer questions. I’ve even gone out to job sites with students. I enjoy serving as a mentor for budding decorative artists and entrepreneurs. I know Kathy Carroll believes this as well. I’ve been thankful to her as she has helped me throughout the years.”

As her new business continues to grow, Kathy looks forward to the progression of both her businesses. “After a two year hiatus when I was primarily working for Benjamin Moore, my focus for Atlanta Decorative Finishes is largely built on the same principles of service, support, and quality. My hope is to grow the school, the product lines, and the application business,” said Kathy.
